I think what you're looking for is "do shell script." You can read more about it here. You could use that to invoke the perl interpreter with your script.

I moved your post to a more appropriate forum - this is more of a development question.

Just a question for my edification. If you know Perl, why on earth would you use Applescript?

OS X integration. There's much more that AppleScript can do that Perl can't when it comes to interacting with applications.

Interesting. I had always assumed that Applescript was a trivial scripting language left over from the ancient System 7 days. Just casually looking at some of it, it appears that the original coders must have come from a LISP environment.

But, like you said, it appears to be totally oriented toward the connection of different OSX apps and not for stand alone scripts.
