Hi I've just realised my macbook pro is a mess and I want to tidy it up. I have backed everything up onto a drive with time machine is it ok to just delete everting on my computer then drag back the bits I need? Any help would be much appreciated!

I would strongly urge you to not do anything of this sort unless you know what you are deleting.
Honestly, about all you need to do providing you have adequate disk free space (greater than 15%) is to run Onyx (free download) and possibly do an occasional defrag with software like iDefrag (I haven't tried this, but some of our members have recommended it).
At the moment, all I use is Onyx

Only delete files that you have created and no longer want to keep. Stay out of System or Library, etc.

Don't delete anything. Follow Razormac's advice above. You can download OnyX from here. (It's free)
