3gs to 4s defect

I have a 3gs and currently now have a 4s. I backed up my 3gs and restored it on the 4s. There was a crash everytime I deleted a recent call in the phone app. I was wondering if I could just transfer my SMS to my 4s from my 3gs. i tried to do it manually by copying the text file from the backup file and putting it into a new back up but my 4s said the backup was corrupted. So is there a way to just transfer my SMS to my 4s?

EDIT: actually it doesn't look like you can restore them back to the 4S.
