I have owned this laptop now for about a year and a half. It has OS X 10.6.8. lately it is beginning to develop a worsening problem. The curser is acting erratic and locking up for a few seconds and the occasions of these freezes are getting more frequent. Someone suggested It was a Trojan, however I was led to believe that would not happen with a Mac?? If this is a problem how do I get rid of it and or cure these freezes? My updates are automatic and I am updated on all but my printer softwear and I-tunes at the moment.

It's not a trojan. It could be the sign of a hardware problem or even software. First try performing some maintenance clean up on your machine. The best software to do that is OnyX a free utility which can be run in auto mode.

If that doesn't seem to help, try this: Boot your MBP with your original Snow Leopard DVD. Don't proceed with the installation routine but instead click on the top menu item "Utilities" and then select "Disk Utility". Highlight your hard drive on the left side and proceed to do a verify and repair from the First Aid tab on the right side. Additionally, do a repair permissions.

Let us know the results.

re: problem with cursur

Well I used the OnyX program and ran the utiities . Also reset the PRAM and NVRAM. I also ran the disk utility on the OSX installation DVD for verify and repair. There were repairs made, however the problem with the cursur is still haunting this laptop. I am presently trying to download ClamXav so I can check for viruses, but with my terribly slow connection I may not get it . This is the 4th try, I will let it download and go to bed. If it has not disconnected again I will be able to run that program in the morning.

This problem with my curser is getting worse, and I may not be functional at all soon. I still have not been able to get the ClamXav program, as it keeps stalling and quitting before it is fully downloaded. I do have a terrible connection here. I will try again tonight. any suggestions are welcome...

I hope you don't get offended by this but I doubt ClamXav will solve it. There are no true Virus's for OSX. There are 2 or 3 malwares that have nothing to do with your issue and only are gotten through Porn and videos anyway. The only thing Virus wise Clam is going to find are Windows Virus's and they can do nothing to your Mac.

Thanks for the information, I will not try to get ClamXav just yet then. If there are any suggestions I need them soon as this laptop is going overseas with me for 3 months in January. There are a couple computer gurus here on the island I may employ to try to improve this thing, at the last resort. Also noticed that my battery indicator only goes to 99% now for some reason??

Thanks to all the folks that commented and gave me suggestions on what to check for this problem with the cursur. I may have accidentally cured at least the major problem, by getting rid of my mouse. It seems that without it I have regained most of the functionality of the curser. My browser still locks up occasionally and the battery indicator is not 100% but things are much better now. Thanks again to you all. This is an active and very good forum and I will stay in tune. T
