I have a late 2009 24" iMac with a 2.93 core2 duo processor. I recently upgrade my ram to 8 gigs. I have no problems and my computer runs as it should. Recently I had a scratch your head moment. Since a 64 bit operating system can support an obscene amount of ram, what would happen if I swapped my 4 gig sticks for 8 gig sticks?

Amount of RAM supported is usually a function of the support chips on the motherboard. MacTracker says only 8 GB supported, so I think I believe them.
(and yes, they did report the correct amount when it differed from Apple specs in the past.)

Unless you have apps that will take advantage of it doubt you will see a major jump.
Look at the Activity Monitor if you have a lot of page in/out then yes it will help unless
it was not supported in the first place and since MacTracker is usually spot on probably not.

What would happen?...two things:
- you're wallet will be a lot lighter (8 gig sticks og ram aren't cheap)
- you will have wasted your money...since your iMac has a max. ram limit of 8 gig
Just because your iMac can support 64-bit...does not mean that it can automatically support "obscene amounts of ram".
