Since I have downloaded Lion onto my iMac it takes ages to open up
a web page, can anyone please explain why this happens. It doesn't happen on my iPad.

You may be better doing a clean install of Lion. You can download another copy from the App Store and before running it burn to a thumb drive, boot from the drive, erase the hard drive and do a clean install. If there is anything you want to save backup to an external first.
