how effective is secure empty trash?............. not that i have anything to hide!
I use a free application "AppCleaner" which also deletes all other files associated with the app to be deleted. Simply drag the application's icon from the "Applications" folder onto the opened "AppCleaner" window, all associated files will be listed and "Delete" and "Cancel" buttons appear for your selection. You can also use it for stubborn application files that won't delete. It will work even when they are in use in case you download a junk program you don't want. I use it for that all the time.
And secure empty trash is gone with El Capitan.Understood they had it solved as this thread is ten years old!

Hope this (belatedly) helps.
