When to partition a backup hard drive?

I have an iMac and just purchased a 2 TB Seagate external hard drive. I intend to use this to back up my documents and photos. In addition, I have some video projects which I plan to store on the external HD because they will be too big to keep on the iMac itself. I will back up finished videos on DVDs.

My question: is there a reason to partition the external HD into a backup drive and a video storage drive? What are the pros/cons?

The main reason to partition your external is " organizational " clarity.
Technically there is no reason to partition.

Just a heads up .... if you partition your drive with a partition for Time Machine and an partition for your video projects, it does not make sense to have Time Machine backup your video projects ( on the same drive ) ... i have seen it all too often.

Got it. You mean, if the external HD fails, even with 2 partitions, the video and its backup both would be lost, right?
