I am starting out with xcode and following a tutorial. I've looked at a few hello world tutorials. In each one at some point the programmer tells the viewer to click on the .xib file. No such file is created by default when I create a new project.
To create a new project I have been doing file-> new ->project -> single view application, next, next, create.

You don't say which version of Xcode you are using. Look in the yellow folders. Following your direction on both Xcode 3.2.6 & 4.2 does create .xib files.

Quite right. Sorry about that.
Xcode: 4.2
OS: 10.7
Yes, in all tutorials the .xib file is on the left in the yellow folders, but not when I create a new file. I am starting to suspect that xcode did not install properly. First reboot after installing xcode got me a kernel panic.

I'm a beginner too, so you're warned :)

In the fall 2011 Stanford edu video, no .xib file is displayed during the first project tutorial.
The teacher designes the view via storyboard.
So I think that different behaviors may depend on project settings.

BTW you should look at those lessons too, they're free on iTunes University and they're way better than most tutorials I saw.
