why cant i transfer music from the macbook pro to a WD external hard drive?

Because you left out telling us that the WD external drive is formatted for NTFS, which the Mac does not natively support writing to (since its a Windows format). Reformat the drive for Mac (using Disk Utility) and everything will be fine.
