Can't import movie file into iMovie

Last year we used iMovieHD and I had no trouble hooking up my camcorder and importing video directly into iMovie. We just upgraded to new computers with Snow Leopard and I have been having nothing but trouble.

I found out my Firewire cable wasn't compatible with the new computer so went and got an 800 Firewire. Then I tried importing but got a message that I can't import to a network drive or something similar. I ended up going over to another school to use the older computer and iMovieHD and finally got the video out of the camera. I tried exporting as a mov file but can't import that into the new version of iMovie. I tried exporting as an mp4 but can't import that, either. iMovie9 either says it can't import the file or it shuts down.

What file formats can I import into iMovie9?
