Are there circumstances under which one should install anti-viral software on a Mac? Bank recommended this action after a security breach in online banking.

If the bank experienced a security breach in their security for on line banking it wasn't due to a virus! There is no need for AV software since there are no viruses in the wild that can effect the Mac operating system. However, in order to comply with your bank's wishes, you might want to download and install the free ClamXav 2 for OS X.
