Broken screen, help please

Hey my friend's macbook randomly has a problem with his screen as you can see in the picture. He just opened it up tonight and this happened, there was nothing wedged between the keyboard and screen that could have caused this, or anything like that. Is there anything we can do to try to fix it, besides bring it to the apple store?? If anyone has any idea, please let me know. Thanks a lot! I also know this might be in the wrong part of the forum, please forgive me as I am new to this site. Thanks again!

Did he by chance drop the machine? Or perhaps had in his school backpack wedged between books? Whatever happened, Apple is not going to cover it under warranty. Tell your friend to be prepared to pay for the screen plus labor to have it replaced.
