Safari 5.1.1 New Tab

I am new to Macs and trying to set up my new Macbook Pro. I'm trying to learn how to open up a blank new tab on Safari, but I can't so far. I can do it on Chrome. Try using the preferences by using the cmd + click and so on. I tried searching already.

cmd+t will do it or just double click to the right of the existing tab...or click File>New Tab

thanks for the quick reply. i have done that many times, but i never stay there long enough to notice the url bar. i will set the new tab empty page now. thanks again.
