Thanks for the reply, I just wasn't sure if it was within the norm or not considering the noise wasn't there from the get go.

First time mac user. I have a 2011 iMac and noticed it started making a noise in the optical drive during startup. It didn't do that the first day or so, so I wasn't sure if its normal or not.. Check out the audio clip:

As bobtomay indicated it's normal, however, that's not the optical drive you're hearing - it's the hard drive bringing the heads up for read access in order to boot the machine.

I have a 2011 iMac and it made that noise from day one. I would be worried if it didn't make that sound. ;D
