A lot of beach balls recently. Why?

Another Question: I have 4 gb of RAM, two gb in each slot, I believe (see attached). How hard would it be for me to open up the machine and max out the RAM? What is the max? 8 gb?

Assuming you have a "Mid-2010" 13" MacBook Pro…the actual max ram is 16gig. You probably don't need 16gig…8gig is a nice amount.:)

By the way…regarding the beachballs, restarting, and the swap file. With 8gig of ram…the frequency of restarting needed to zero out the swap file is GREATLY reduced.

I have a 13" MBP with 4gig of ram…and a 17" MBP with 8gig of ram. And the MBP with 8gig of ram needs to be restarted MUCH LESS!:)

As far as the ram upgrade. Pretty easy. You need to remove the bottom panel of the computer (micro screwdriver needed)…10 screws. You can go to iFixit.com for the procedure to get a better idea before doing it.

Where online do you recommend I get the RAM? What prices?

I could go for 16 gb. I want to max it out. Depends on price, of course.

We usually recommend Mac Sales (Other World Computing) or Crucial. However, lately Amazon.com has been selling Crucial memory for less than what you can buy it direct from Crucial. I purchased 2 x 4 GB modules for my 2013 iMac from Amazon (Crucial modules) and saved $20.00 plus got free shipping. Other World Computing memory is more expensive than both Crucial and Amazon but are very reliable dealers. As are Crucial and Amazon.

Thanks, chscag.

How do I know if my date of manufacture is mid-2009 or mid-2010?

EDIT: It's on apple.com. Duh.

You can also go to the:

This window mentions it.

I order some memory this a.m. Will drop those bad boys in and see how it affects this slow-moving Swap Used issues. ;)

Thanks for the help!

I'm running 10.9.3 (just updated my sig), and I don't see anything anywhere that looks like a date of manufacture. :(

By the way. That was a photo I pulled off the internet (you can see the "osxdaily.com" in the corner). I didn't mean for you to think that I was going "over the top" with all of the red arrows!;)

8 gb of RAM went in without a hitch. But I took the stickers off the RAM before installing them. That was probably the wrong thing to do. Ah, well.

While I was in there, I noticed this big sign saying "Do Not Remove Battery." What's the big deal with removing the battery?

I can't find "page outs" under memory in my Activity Monitor. I do have "virtual memory". Is that the same thing?

With 10.9 (Mavericks)...Activity Monitor no longer lists Page-Outs.
