I'm getting my imac today and have an additional 8gb of ram that I'll be installing on it. I know that there are 4 slots for ram. 2 of the slots will be occupied by 2 gb modules and I'll be installed the 4 gb modules in the remaining 2. Can I just pop the 4 gb modules into the remaining slot or should they go in the existing slots being that they have a higher memory capacity? I'm just trying to make sure I have all my bases covered before I go ahead with installing it.

Just stick 'em in the two spare slots.

No worries. As long as you put the ram in parallel then I can't see you having any issues with it.

I.e.

----||---- <-- 2x2gb
----||---- <-- 2x4gb

And not like this:

----||---- <-- 1x2gb + 1x4gb
----||---- <-- 1x2gb + 1x4gb

That's what I was wondering about. I forgot how it was supposed to go and was worried that would cause a conflict. Well I'm just installing the 2 sticks in teh 2 spare slots so I should be good. The only other thing I was concerned was if the bigger ram should go on top.

Nah, it doesn't make a difference if the bigger ones go on top. As long as they are parallel, you'll be fine. :)

I have a question question

Make sure the ram is compatible as you say you have an additional 8 are they 1333MHz and not 1066MHz ?
Sir, I'm about to buy a new Imac 27" 2TB, 2GB Vram , The question is how ram do I need? I do heavy duty Motion graphics using Adobe AE, C4D, Apple motion and tones of video. if I got the 16GB, can I upgrade it to 32GB, the Apple store told me the motherboard won't recognize it? is that true? will it mess up the Imac & what do you recommend?

Thanks
P.S: love for others to join the discussion too.

DO NOT buy ram from Apple. It's very overpriced. Buy your iMac with the standard 4GB and upgrade it yourself with memory from OWC

Apple only recommends 16GB but it has been shown that the new iMacs are fully capable of supporting 32GB of ram.
