You need to double check if you have a DL burner in your iBook, something that I doubt to be honest.
Check in system profiler and it will tell you.

i presume with the following that it doesnt support it -

'MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-845E:

Firmware Revision: DMP2
Interconnect: ATAPI
Burn Support: Yes (Apple Shipped/Supported)
Cache: 2048 KB
Reads DVD: Yes
CD-Write: -R, -RW
DVD-Write: -R, -RW, +R, +RW
Burn Underrun Protection CD: Yes
Burn Underrun Protection DVD: Yes
Write Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, DVD-DAO
Media: No'

ooo that looks quite good, it is basically a plug in dvd dl writer?

Yes, and Yes :)

Your current burner is single layer only, the one in the link is dual.
Bear something in mind, burning dual layer is not straightforward at all.

No, depending on what you are burning, but there are layer breaks to consider among other things. It's very tricky.

And to burn an 8.5GB DL disc, suggest after you get the DL burner, use Toast Titanium.

A DVD unit such as you have will read the DL, for installing operating systems etc., but not burn them
