Somehow I missed it in reviewing the specs before purchase. I was surprised to discover that the IPhone 4S continues to only support wireless N on the 2.4 Ghz band. I can live with it, of course, but it is a little behind the times.

I would hardly consider 802.11N behind the times..it is surely sufficiently fast compared to 802.11B/G..

But being forced to stay on 2.4 Ghz when new N routers are dual band and can use the less congested 5Ghz band is a little disappointing to me.

that would hurt battery life since 5Ghz take more power and is most cases 2.4 is faster with most routers.

Is there a phone out there that can use 5GHz N ?
Most all the specs I have seen say 2.4GHz N.

Mobile devices play by different rules than others..put a lot of features that try to appease everyone and take a huge hit on battery life and everyone is up at arms about it..people these days want to continually use the mobile device throughout the day on a single charge with Bluetooth, WiFi and other very power-intensive (think games) apps running..that's just not the reality of the batteries these days..

To that end, certain things have to give..as Rainmac1 stated, the 5GHz antenna would require more power but for what benefit really?

Not to mention terrible range. Most consumer dual band routers have awful range on 5GHz. Thats been my experience anyway.

Very true @lbatson21, the higher the frequency, the shorter the range..900 Mhz can go quite a distance..and some of the RF devices I've worked with are around 300 Mhz or lower which can get ranges of about 1.5 miles..with 5 Ghz is a few hundred feet at best..
