Optical Drive

for some reason my optical drive just failed. In system profiler under burning device it says : No burning device was found. If you are using an external device please make sure that it is connected and powered properly.

do you think it just got connected from the logic board or do you think my whole optical drive is dead? should applecare cover this?

also is there any way i can use the apple hardware test without a cd(since i can't insert a cd because my optical drive is broken) will the hardware test tell me if my optical drive is broken? also when i press eject on the keyboard the eject symbol doesn't come up on the screen.
