I recently purchased and downloaded OS X Lion, but i am having trouble getting it to work. It says 'this disk cannot be used to start up your computer':

Why would it be doing this

Very strange. Your 2010 MBP is well able to run Lion and you have way more than enough disk free space.

Just a stab in the dark, but if you have Onyx may want to have it check your HD for problems, and/or use Disk Utility to repair permissions.

Something is odd. From pic one it would appear there is another partition with 75GB odd in use, however that does not appear in Disk Utility. If there is nothing else on the disk, when in Partition select one partition.

To remove a Bootcamp partition, you do need to use the Bootcamp Assistant and NOT Disk utility. Reformat and select the one partition structure and see how you go.

I was going to ask based on that if you had run boot camp. If I had to guess, I would say that may be at least part of the problem.

Do you have a good backup to restore from? If so, may be worth creating a USB Lion Boot Drive and installing from that, doing a clean install by reformatting the HD.

EDIT: I see that Harry has joined the conversation. Excellent, he knows this stuff far better than me.

i should have used bootcamp assistant, but it cant help now that bootcamp has been removed?
Reformat, does that mean wipe all my data. I dont recall using the backup option except for putting my photos onto a disk.

If you have an external drive available, use Time Machine to backup to it and you can restore from it after you have installed Lion.
Your other choice appears to be to stick with Snow Leopard.
