syncing hotmail with Mail

I have just got a new macbook pro and I am trying to set up my hotmail account in the Mail App.. it sets up okay but it's not syncing.

with my iPhone i can delete and read messages from my hotmail account and i can also access the folders i have set up.

on my macbook pro it's showing 200+ unread messages when there are actually none that are unread it's just there are 200+ email in my inbox.

can anyone tell me how i can get it so the mail app will sync with hotmail?

I don't use hotmail anymore, but when I did, there came a time when hotmail wouldn't allow me to use anything like Outlook or another app to access my email. I'm not sure if that is what's going on with yours, but eventually, I just quit using hotmail and switched to gmail.
