Hi,

I am new to the Apple world. I just bought my very first Macbook Pro 15 (2007) version for 500.00! 120 GB HD, 2 GB Ram. It is used and I have had it for about three weeks and LOVE it!!

Now, a friend of mine has an iMac (2009) version in great shape. 4GB Ram, 300 GB HD. He is wanting to trade me my macbook pro for his imac.

Is this a good deal or would I be better off keeping the toy that I have??

To me it wouldn't be about the relative cost as much as whether I wanted a desktop or laptop.
I am not up that much on cost of used Macs but if I had to guess I would say the iMac is roughly equivalent value assuming it is the smaller iMac (check at Mac2Sell and other sites if it is that important to you).

Bottomline: if you want a laptop keep your MBP. If you are hankering for a desktop trade for the iMac and make you and your friend happy.

Stay with what you have. You enjoy using your MBP, now ask yourself what if you did do the swap and the iMac is faulty? If you wanted an iMac no doubt you would have purchased one.

why don't you buy the imac from him, and have the best of both like i did? however my laptop is a g4 powerbook and my imac is a core duo model.

We have 3 MBPs, 2 Lenovo laptops, and 1 older iMac in my house, but guess which machine is used to do the real work and is used almost all day long? It's the one I'm on right now, the iMac. I still consider this the best toy I ever bought.

The iMac would probably be an upgrade for you. I say go for it!

To me it all boils down to if you need the portability of the laptop.

The iMac is an upgrade in terms of hardware, but it also isn't something that you can put into a briefcase and lug around town. If you're going to visit someone it's easy to grab a laptop. It is a lot more difficult to bring along your iMac.

The ideal situation is to have both. I keep our iMac on the desk at the office and use my older MacBook for those times I need portability. Even better for myself would be an iPad rather than the older MacBook. But we're waiting to see what iPad 3 will be like. Probably won't see that until 2012.
