Badge Icon App

On the 4S, can someone explain to me what is Badge App Icon in the Notifications menu? It has an option to either turn this on or off and I have no idea what a Badge App Icon is. Please help.

It's a little red circle with a number in it.

So if you have 1 unread email, there will be a red circle with a 1 in it, in the corner of the mail app icon.

That's what a badge app icon is. :)
