iMessage on multiple devices

Hey guys,
Really simpe- I have my my iPhone and iPad both on the same apple ID, but my threads will not transfer between the devices. My iPad messages are received as my email... Can I send a message from my iPad to an iOS device and have it received from my phone number?
Apple advertised this on the website when explaining iOS- conversations are carried throughout all iOS devices.
What am I doing wrong?

You need to add your email address as your iMessages contact on both devices and make sure your friends are sending messages to your email, not your phone number.

Check the iMessage settings to see what I mean.
