imac video output hack

I have a late-2006 Intel iMac bought well used that immediately developed the vertical line syndrome and then the display completely failed. The secondary monitor still works as does everything else as far as I can tell (I can't see the primary display). Is there some way of detaching the internal lcd and attaching the primary video output to an external display? Thanks, Blair
