i am told to click the restart button. but there is no restart button. if i click restart from apple menu, all i get is the no-you-can't-go there sign on the gray screen.

Snow Leopard can not do an Archive and Reinstall. However, a reinstall of Snow Leopard over itself is designed not to wipe out data, photos, documents, user settings, etc. It will only overwrite system files and kexts. Afterward you must run software update to bring SL back up to date. Always make a backup first!
