When hooking my macbook pro up to my hdtv, is there a way for me to close the macbook but still have it play a video on my tv? I've read that there is a "clamshell" mode but it said that you have to close the macbook and then press a key on an external keyboard. I do not have an external keyboard hooked up to it.

You need to purchase an external keyboard and mouse in order to use clamshell mode. So yes, the Apple KB article is correct. Just follow their directions.

If you're running Snow leopard or earlier, then you do have to press a key on the external keyboard/mouse after closing the MBP. However, you can simply close the lid in Lion and it switches to the external display without having to press a key on the keyboard first.
