iMessenger for iPad2 - Contacts?!?!?!

Just upgraded my ipad2 to iOS5 and was keen to get iMessenger up and running. I've previously used whats app where it automatically shows you who already has the app. Am I correct in saying that iMessenger does not do this? Nightmare!!! How am I supposed to know who has it? Just scroll through my contacts until I see a blue bubble? Useless! Help please! :)

Look in the box where you write texts, it will display the words text message or iMessage. As of now, that's been the only way i've been able to see who has it.
