danger of power surge when recharging?

If I use my Macbook in India, and am charging it with the computer OFF (and without using a surge protector), could a power surge hurt the computer?

I don't know if a power surge would hurt the machine while it's charging but it might very well damage the MagSafe charger unit. When in an area where power surges are common, it's best to use a heavy duty surge protector.
