I am a very very new Mac user. I bought a Power Mac G5 Dual processors cheap and I have it up and running but the cd drive will not open. It makes the noise but never opens up. It still plays the cd that is inside because every time I go to Itunes, it tries to import it. I have seen on other forums that you can dis-assemble the dirve and remove the cd. If I am going to go through all that trouble, I might just as well replace it. My question is this - can I replace it with a cd drive I get at at retail store like Best Buy or does it need to specifically be for a Mac computer?
Thanks
Joe

Don't buy one off the shelf from Best Buy or another store unless it's specifically for the G5. I recommend buying from Mac Sales (Other World Computing). They're Mac specialists and highly recommended by most folks that post in these forums. Very good quality merchandize and support. They also have an 800 number where you can speak with a live person. Here is the LINK to the site.

Also, make sure that the door is able to slide down freely. This can cause the drive not to open if the sliding door on the Mac itself is not able to slide down freely to its open position. This can happen if the front of the computer (as shown in picture) has been pushed in. You can carefully try to pull away the chassis of the computer to free the drive door so it doesn't bind when trying to open.

G5 optical drive

I refuse to waste the money on Apple Optical drives I have replaced mine with OEM pioneer in both my old G5 and my new Mac Pro 2.8 Quad and they work fine all you have to do is gently remove faceplate from DVD door, problem solved and money in your pocket;D

If you open the cover and look for a little hole on the front of the drive. Insert a straight paper clip and push in the hole and the drawer will open. Other wise just remove the drive from the case holder. There are several screws to remove and replace the drive.

As said a Pioneer, even a used DVR-112D will do the job and you should get one for less than $25.00. Google installing optical drive in G5t and you will find many instructions on how to go about it. It is a simple fifteen minute job.

And Apple do not make optical drives, just use supplies as contracted, such as Pioneer, LG, etc.
