• The Mac-Forums Community Guidelines (linked at the top of every forum) are very clear, we respect US law and court precedence when it comes to legality of activity.

    Therefore to clarify:
    • You may not discuss breaking DVD or BluRay encryption, copying, or "ripping" commercial, copy-protected DVDs.
    • This includes DVDs or BluRays you own. Even if you own the DVD or BluRay, it is still technically illegal under the DMCA to break the encryption. While some may argue otherwise, until the law is rewritten or the US Supreme Court strikes it down, we will adhere to the current intent of the law.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying unprotected movies or homemade DVDs.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying tools in the context that they are used for legal purposes as outlined in this post.

I have an sd card from a Canon camcorder that has avi video that i am trying to import into iMovie. I believe that avi files are compatible with iMovie but when i try to import it does not see the files on the card.

I have also tried to convert the avi files to mov files using converting software but i then get no sound but the video is good.

I use Flip4Mac for converting AVI files.
I always thought that Flip4Mac was purely for playing WMV/A files on a Mac.

Avi files are just containers for video and audio files which may have been produced by various codecs, not all of which are recognised by your Mac. I have some avi files that iMovie recognises and some which it doesn't.

MPEGStreamclip will be best for converting your avi files. Export to Quicktime, using the Apple Intermediate Codec(AIC) setting, as this is format that iMovie uses.
