ive aquired an old iMac from my dad as im intrested in app development, but he had Windows XP installed on it.

ive bought OSX lion on USB thumb drive, without realising you are meant to upgrade from previous version of OSX

i was hoping i could boot from the the USB and install from there.

he doesnt have any original disk so i cant restore.

The iMac should boot from the USB drive. Then install from there.

Hold the option key during the boot.

Don't have to go to BIOS as the iMac does not have that. Just hold the option key during the boot cycle and then select the USB drive.

When you say "old" iMac -- how old? What model?

How do we know it's even capable of running Lion?

That actually is a good point. With XP you can't give us all the specs, but what Mac is this? Is it Intel or old Power PC? Lion will only install on a Core2Duo CPU or higher.

I'm guessing it's an intel Mac (XP wouldn't run otherwise).

Just depends if is Core2Duo or DualCore

Once XP is running - right-click 'My Computer' and choose 'properties' this should tell you which processor is in there and how much RAM you have
