Had this today when I booted up on my iMac, tried turning it on incase that worked but it never so I tried re-starting which did the trick.

Any ideas what may have caused it and is it common?

Yep. j0nb0y32 is correct. It happens to me all the time when I forget and turn on the keyboard and mouse during boot. What happens is the BT radio is locking on to the KB and mouse at the same time the airport card is locking on to the wireless signal. I guess it's too much for the poor brain of the machine. :)
