There are a few different tools that will help immensely with video playback on the Mac. Three things I recommend installing for any new Mac user are:
1. VLC Media Player. This is an open source media player that will play most popular and some of the more obscure video formats.
2. Perian. This is a package of different codecs that enhance Quicktime's repertoire of formats it can play.
3. Flip4Mac. This is an add-on for Quicktime to help it play Windows Media Player video.
