Bookmark help?

I'm loving my MacBook so far but I'm having problems adding bookmarks. I go to add bookmark and still it isn't there when I open the bookmarks. I'm sure i'm missing something here. Thanks in advance for the help.

I click on the + at the beginning of the address bar then it prompts me to place it while giving me a choice of where in the drop down menu.

Are you selecting to add them to the Bookmarks Bar, Bookmarks Menu, or where?
