I was wondering if my Macbook Pro (Mid-2009) would be compatible with a Momentus 2.5–Inch Laptop Hard Drive Internal Kit – 7200 RPM or Model ST903203N3A1AS-RK SATA 3Gb/s 320 GB from Notebook Internal 2.5 Inch 7200 RPM Mini Hard Drives: 320GB-500GB SATA 7200 RPM | Seagate ... I heard this was a beast of a HDD and that it was and wasn't compatible with mac's. After Formatting and replacing would my Macbook be able to run normally? I will also be upgrading my ram with these: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B004GNL1NC/?tag=macforums0e4-20 If you have a recommendation for other Ram Upgrades please reply, but they have to be 1067 MHz DDR3 Memory Modules.

Your machine uses the following hard drive specs: SATA, 2.5" width, 9.5MM thick. So yes, that hard drive will work OK. The memory likewise is OK.

Is this information available easily somewhere? I have the same question for my late-2007 MacBook Pro 17". I have a 160GB drive and I'd like to swap in the Hitachi Travelstar (750GB 7200RPM). This drive is also 9.5mm thick.

Thanks!
Larry.

Same answer as above. As long as it's a 2.5" SATA laptop drive, 9.5mm height/thick...it will work.

Take a look at Mactracker - Get Info on any Mac. It's a great resource for finding information about every Mac ever made. It also gets updated regularly as new models are released.

+1. I keep it on my Dock and use it at least several times a day answering questions in our forums. I especially like it because you can back search by model number and find out the year and original specs for Macs going back to 1984.

Consider a Seagate Momentus XT SSD-Hybrid 500GB drive. Cost is low but the performance is very SSD-like in a MacBook Pro, in my experience.

Sorry to take so long to reply here. At first I was dead-set on the Hitachi but after your suggestion I did some more thinking and research. Thanks for your suggestion! It looks like a really great drive but I ended up buying the 750GB Hitachi. I figured for the way I use this system I don't actually reboot too much. I usually just shut the lid and let it sleep. It wakes up pretty quickly and is pretty fast over all (considering the age). So, I went for capacity over speed and got the Hitachi.

Thanks again!

I installed the WD Scorpio Blue 1TB 5200RPM with no performance loss whatsoever. Mind you my original drive was the Hitachi 500g 5400RPM, so I was obviously going for storage capacity vs speed. I have over 300g in music alone, so it was easily the best $100 upgrade ever!
