Item cannot be moved to trash or deleted

I have been working on excel all day and when I shut it down I found two xlsx documents on my desktop with odd file names. I tried to delete them and a pop up window read:

The item “8FED4D00” can’t be moved to the Trash because it can’t be deleted.

I don't know exactly what to do. I am unable to open the file, get info, or modify the file.

Does anyone have an idea?

Close MS Office Excel. Reboot. Now try to delete the files.

I tried to delete my previous post in the incorrect forum (hardware thread) but did not know how to -- I was advised to post in the correct "software" thread. It won't happen again.
