Problems setting default application for filetypes

Despite checking "Always Open With" the other files still don't open with my preferred application..

I'm running a fresh install of Lion and trying to get VLC to open all AVI files.

Instead of enabling VLC for all AVIs it only remembers it for that single file..



Am I doing something wrong?
Is there another way to accomplish this?

I have the same problem for mp3 files as well.

Download the free Default Preference Pane application from here. Use it to set the default application.
