I currently have 2 GB ram installed on my iMac. I'd like to upgrade to 8 GB at the very least. Below you'll find my specs. My questions is can I buy any branch of RAM?

Processor: 2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
Memory: 800 MHz DDR2 SDRAM

Thanks.

I'm new to this board. Hi to everyone. :waves:

Too bad they are located in the UK. I'm in North America. Also I was only able to find RAM for 24 inch as the 27 inch was not listed.

I guess the question I have is, does it matter the brand of RAM i purchase as long as I have the specs correct. In my case 800 MHz DDR2 SDRAM

After a little googling I discovered the iMac 2.8Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo can only expand up to 6GB of ram. Does that sound correct?

Very appreciative of the replies. Thank you.

Yes, that's correct. Your machine has only two memory slots, so that means one each 2 GB module plus one each 4 GB module. Check with Other World Computing for best prices for Mac memory.

One of the very first questions you should be asking is..."What is the max. ram for my computer?"

Because from what I can tell (with the specs. given)...officially from Apple...it can only be upgraded to 4 gig of ram. Although 3rd-party folks have been successful at installing 6 gig.

So the desire to upgrade this is iMac to "8GB at the very least"...is not possible.

Edit: Looks like you found the max. ram info 2 minutes before I posted.

Thank you both, repped you all. I'll settle for an increase from my current 2GB to 4GB. :)

Side note: Ram prices have really dropped, last time I was looking was about a year ago and was much more expensive.

2gig to 4gig is a nice increase (doubling)...but don't forget you can also upgrade to 6gig.
