how do i turn on wifi on old deactivated iphone 3g?

I got a used iphone 3g today for super cheap and I am looking to use it as an ipod with wifi for my kid. it is deactivated from at&t and when i try to connect to the wifi in the house, it keeps saying it can't connect to it. what do i need to do to it to make it work for what i need? thanks!!
