I have downloaded few programs which are not shown in the applications folder and which I am finding hard to remember their names, is there a way to see what I have installed, like a history of some kind?

Thanks

Open Finder and navigate to:

Macintosh HD/Library/Receipts/

That will show everything that has been installed. Note that they're listed in a folder named for each. Opening the folder and digging down to "resources" will show where they were installed.

You should have a folder for downloads in several categories in Finder.

chscag: the receipts fold only has a BSD.pkg, a "db" folder (nothing in it) and "installhistory.plist" <-- I opend that and see what I think I am looking for. It is an xml file - is this right?

thanks

You should have quite a bit in that folder. Your downloads folder as osxx stated may also have some items in it. However, some applications will remove the zip or dmg file from downloads after it's installed and dump it in the trash.

every time I install the program, the relative file gets removed from the downloads folder (as you said). the db folder is still empty, the only promising file is IntallHistory.plist, this is and example of what is has:
