Slow mail in Lion?

Since upgrading to Lion I find the Mail application is very slow in downloading my messages. In Snow Leopard the mail was instant. On my iPhone and iPad the messages download in an instant. I have tried deleting my mail accounts and reconfiguring them but to no avail.

Any advice will be most welcome.

Is this the only place you are experiencing speed issues? Is your internet slow? Are you connected wirelessly or wired? Have your mail settings changed of how you access the mail servers?

That is the only speed issue. My internet is fine 30MBps. My iMac is connected by ethernet cable. Email settings remains the same and are not slow on my iPad or iPhone.
