I'm using my old 2006 MBP hard drive as an external one and would like to make it usable for both windows and mac. Is this doable, and if so how?

So I think I need to reformat it. Is it possible to have it reformatted to work on windows and still support time machine on the mac side?

Not without a third party driver such as MacDrive. Reason is because Time Machine will only backup to a drive formatted as HFS Extended Journaled.

However, you can partition the drive into two partitions: HFS+ and FAT-32.
