I have Onyx installed on my mac - I have 4 users, myself and 3 children - when i log in as my user and run Onyx, does it just run its cleaning etc on my user or do i need to log into each individual user and run onyx

Run OnyX from your Admin account. It's not necessary to run it from any other account nor will it run anyway without Admin permissions. It does its maintenance on the entire hard drive not just your user files and folders.
