I would like to start making videos of myself drumming to critique technique and maybe eventually post to Youtube.

I have a simple Sony Bloggie HD pocket video camera mounted on a tripod, a Yamaha mixer with USB (unfortunately it's only 1.1) and a late 08' MacBook Pro. I'm using Audacity to record the audio from the mixer.

Which is best suited to mate the audio and video, iMovie 09 or Garageband 09?

Thanks

iMovie, you will need to use that to mix the video and audio together nicely.
Good luck with it, be sure to link me up when your done :)

Thanks Kev. What version of iMovie are you using? I used iMovie HD6 the other day it seems much more intuitive than '09. Also, are you using a mixer and/or software such as Audacity? Thanks

iMovie 09 for mine, which is way better than 8 was. I can't comment on 6, as I never used it.
As for software, I favour Audio Hijack Pro over Audacity, as it has a lot more bells and whistles, BUT, audacity is just as good for this kind of thing.
Mixer wise, I have no need, as I record solely from an electronic kit, and it has a built in mixer. It really depends on how and what you are recording from (mic's, module, etc).
If you want to give more detail of that I'd be more than happy to help.

Thanks

I currently play a Hybrid Kit. It has acoustic cymbals (Paiste Twentys) and snare (Black Beauty) with Roland toms and kick. The snare and cymbals and mic'd, the pads are connected to a TD-12. Everything is run through a Yamaha MG166CXUSB mixer which is connected to my MBP. I use Ultimate Ears IEM's connected to the Headphone port on the mixer.

The biggest challenge so far is of coarse syncing the audio and video. So far, iMovie HD6's Timeline makes the task easier. It's my understanding that iMovie 11 brings back some of the requested features of HD6 in addition to having other new features (or newly reconfigured) that make audio tasks easier but I have not tried '11 yet.

I know that just for making some Youtube videos programs like iMovie or Garageband can get 'close enough' for a decent sound/video track but if that same video was run through a more expensive software you would see how far out of sync your finished video actually is. But, I think once I get used to using a good combination of cheaper audio and video software I will be happy enough with the finished product.

Do you use Audio Hijack Pro to EQ/mix your audio or only as a means to record it before exporting to iMovie? Were kinda in the same boat in that my sound is coming from a mixer and yours from the module.

AHP is used just for recording and then I mix the track in iMovie, syncing it with the video.
It is tricky I admit, but patience prevails in the end.
Because I don;t use a mixer it's just the VEX'd sounds from my module, so you get what you hear from the module basically, no tweeks.
Sounds like you have a nice set up there btw, I love those snares.

Thanks. I'm also a fan of Vex kits. I have Superior Drummer and BFD Eco but I found them to be more of a hassle than just firing up the module with a good Vex kit :)
