My iMAC only 3 years old gets too hot in 3-4 hours of use and only 1 or 2 applications open. It's in well ventilated area and room temperature is very comfortable, 70-80f. Will appreciate if any suggestions.

Three thoughts:

1. This could be an absolutely normal situation (especially if you've changed your computing habits recently). More gaming, more internet videos, more demanding programs.

2. The number of programs open does not always indicate how hard your computer is working. You could just have one demanding app. open which can cause your iMac's temp to increase. For example...you could just have your internet browser open watching a lot of internet videos...and this would cause your computer to heat up a lot.

3. Your iMac may be dirty...blocking the flow of cooling air.

HTH,

- Nick

Define too hot..get something like iStat Menu or other program to get an idea of what temps you are seeing..the iMac should be hot at the top while in operation..that's perfectly normal..
