I've only had the 15" MacBook Pro for a few weeks.

Within past couple of days it stopped playing CDs or DVDs and now spits them out after making a few chugging noises.

Before I try to get it repaired... being new to Macs, I just wondered if there is anything else I can try?

Try a different brand of disks. But really with a machine that new, I would just take it on in and let Apple deal with it. Slot drives are a fussy bunch and much more delicate than the old fashioned tray loaders.

Thanks chscag - have tried different makes of disks, blank and pre-recorded.

Looks like its a trip to the nearest store.

All laptops, PC included, have problems with failed slot drives, not just Apple. Can give you a couple of failed optical drives from a Dell.

Suggest you take up AppleCare prior to your warranty expiring.
