I have upgraded to Lion OS X and the Firefox 6 but overtime I try to launch FireFox it crashes the whole system; it hangs and I am not able to use anything on the Mac. I have tried to revert to older versions of Firefox but the problem persists. Any ideas

They work fine, but there is a lot I need to get of Firefox. I just wish I knew what to do to get it to work!

You're a bit behind - FF6 is the most current stable version. ;)

There could be a variety of reasons for this. Try opening FF in safe mode (hold down option as you open it) and disable addons (at a minimum). Does it open then? If it does, disable all the addons, clear out the cache (Tools > Clear Recent History...) and try to restart it normally.

I stand corrected I see they are at 7.0b2 currently and as you say 6.0 is the stable version.

Yeah, Mozilla's new "accelerated" schedule is throwing quite a few people off in terms of version number. It's worse in the Chrome community where you have 4 sections in the version number. For instance, I'm running Chrome Canary 15.0.866.0.

What actually is it you need from Firefox? Bookmarks etc will import to Safari no problem. I too was a FF user but find the Lion Safari, 5.1, faster and rock steady.

The problem could be related to your profile. Check out this page to see how to create a new FF profile. Launch FF with that profile. If it works, we know it's your current profile that's causing problems.

Safari is a much better browser in Lion. I made the switch from FF and have really been satisfied. It was a good move.
And Roboform works well which is really a necessity. I've been a long time Roboform user.

I wish I could help you but here on both my Macs with Lion, firefox has worked from day one. Running the latest Stable version also here.

I wonder if when you upgraded to Lion, a preference file got corrupted for Firefox? Try making a new User in Lion and log into that account and run Firefox. Does it still crash?

You are all most excellent. The new profile worked, but do I have a way of importing passwords, bookmarks etc from the old one? Sorry for my lack of knowledge and thanks again.

Glad to hear that the new profile worked out for you!

Take a look at this - it outlines how to migrate data from an old profile. Be careful though since something in your old profile is corrupt which was causing the problems. If you migrate something over and FF goes all wonky again, you'll know what the problem was.

Thank you all so very much. The importation of information from profiles seems not to work but at least it's working. Many thanks!
