iMac G5: HELP! I erased the HD for clean install and I'm getting Kernal panic

My iMac G5, 2 GB has been slow, and occasionally getting the "restart your computer" screen. I ran the Apple Hardware Test on it twice. It passed both times, so I decided it must be software. I proceeded to do a clean install of the OS. Now I'm getting the Kernal Panic screen just as the computer recognizes the disk and is about to launch the installer. I've been reading the forums on Kernal Panic. Could be RAM memory. But could it also be the optical drive if its slow to spin at first?

What info on the "Panic" screen would tell me where the problem is?

Ahhh. Thanks, didn't know that.

In the code it said something like this "can not find driver for PowerMac12.1" PowerMac12.1 is your machine. So that means OS can not find driver for your computer.

Are you using "OS X install Disc" that came with another machine?

This can happen if you try to use disc came with another machine or incompatible OS version. If u lost original disc or disc's damaged try to use Retail disc that work with all machine in its generation.

Sorry if you're already use right disc. I got kernel panic like this when I tried to use SL 10.6.0 disc to install my MBP2011 because 10.6.0 doesn't have driver for my hardware. I have to use 10.6.7 disc to install OS X.

Yeah, I saw that too. I am using the actual G5 install discs. But, just now, I put the disk in, and it has launched the installer! (this is after at least 10 attempts, ending with kernal panic) The preparing installation bar has been spinning for 15 minutes ... So I'm not too optimistic.

OIC So it might be DVD disc or optical drive problem coz Installer run directly from DVD disc. getting panic while reading must be one of them.

If your friends own any External DVD drive? borrow one from them. If possible try to find Retail OS X install disc as well.

Thanks, I suspect the optical drive, too. But in all the posts for kernal panic, no one mentioned optical drive as a problem. I'll get a portable drive and give it a try.
